NET

Proposal for Amsterdam Light Festival

Collaborator: Wenya Liu

CONCEPT & THEME

"NET" draws its ethereal muse from Amsterdam's rich fishing heritage and age-old rituals. Inspired by the form of traditional trawl nets, we emphasize their sweeping horizontality while capturing the dynamic tension within each module, their fullness or emptiness mirroring the fortune of each fishing endeavor. This grand-scale sculpture invites visitors to navigate beneath its alluring embrace, allowing them to relive the electrifying moment when nets unfurl across the water's surface, heralding the start of a new season or the hope for a bountiful harvest. Simultaneously, the artwork unveils an ever-changing dance of horizontal, vertical, and density fluctuations, weaving a captivating tale of tension and narrative within its illuminated threads.

VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Our sculpture whispers a symphony of perceptions to its audience. Those strolling along the canal's edge witness a horizontal, rhythmic trawl net, its modulating dance enchanting the water's surface. As wanderers meander, their view of the artwork unfurls, each angle revealing a new dimension.

Beneath the sculpture, other spectators glide by boat, enveloped in the intricate, resplendent net overhead, as if fully captured in the embrace of its woven threads, akin to fish ensnared by its charm. From the city's lofty vantage points, visitors behold an expansive net stretched gracefully upon the water, inviting them to discern the individual cells – the modules of "NET" – pulsating with tension and life.
